Beach Buggy Blitz is very welcoming to newcomers and veterans alike. There’s not much in the way of tutorial, but the game is straightforward enough where one isn’t really needed. Your driver always has the gas held down, and all you need to do is turn and tap the breaks. There are two control methods, touch and tilt. The tilt controls work as expected, but the game plays much better with the precision of touch controls. No matter which option you select, the controls are sharp enough to make quick maneuvers, but just loose enough to keep a challenge – even on cars with a high control stat.You’re given some ability to adjust the graphics to your device’s hardware, but even the low settings are colorful and sharp. The detail put into the drivers and vehicles are standard fare, but the polish of the different environments is what steals the show. While the graphics are still far from most modern PC and console games, they easily hold their own. I ran into occasional framerate issues, but it happened infrequently enough to not be too much of a factor.Fortunately, the game seems to understand the nature of its track generation. To remedy this, you gather coins during your runs and you can spend them on new cars, drivers, item boosts, and upgrades. Drivers are purely aesthetic, but the other options can greatly change the way you play. Different cars have different stats that will change how you approach a run. For example, if you have issues turning, you may want to buy a car with a high turn stat. The item boosts can be picked up while driving and have numerous perks, such as invulnerability toward hazards, and picking up a coin magnet.

The object is always to keep driving along the rather lovely-looking randomly generated tracks for as long as possible by scraping through as many checkpoints as you can before the timer runs out.You'll be lucky to last more than a minute on your first couple of goes, but once you start earning enough in-game credits - or buy a stack via, sensibly-priced, in-app purchases - to unlock some power-ups or a new set of faster wheels, then you'll start extending your time.It's then that you realise the main purpose of Beach Buggy Blitz, aside from collecting rows of coins and jumping over gaps in bridges, is to actually explore as much of the tropical paradise setting as possible.Thanks to the game's intuitive arcade-style steering, which can be either tilt or arrow controlled, you can spend a lot of time enjoying the sun-swept beaches, crumpling temples, and erupting volcanoes as you cruise by. A good amount of high quality foliage really gives it that island feel, racing waterfalls, a gorgeous sun, and dynamic light sources and smoke from a nearby volcano all come together to form a world that really looks as tropical as a beach should be. Car and character models are simplistic in design but the are the most detailed models in the game. I would have preferred some depth between the ridges of the tires on the ATVs and perhaps some reflections, but that’s not a complaint that would keep me from buying this game. It’s Tegra 3 and it looks like it.

Beach Buggy Blitz lets you roll on with some fun surf-like music to get you into that beach feeling. The variety isn’t staggering, but considering you have the option of turning it off and playing something else in the background I’d say this isn’t much to worry about. As for sound effects, the waves do roar onto the shore of the beach as you race past them. You can hear seagulls planning their next attack on someone’s unsuspecting head, the vehicle does sound like the variety it’s modeled after, and crashing into destructible objects give you that destructive satisfaction you’re listening for even if the crashing sounds are a bit over the top. Build a performance-boosting collection of upgrades and powerups! Unlock new vehicles like the Lightning muscle car and Rock Stomper monster truck. Upgrade your cars and customize their paint jobs. Collect wacky new characters. Unlock and upgrade amazing powerups like the fire-spitting Boost, the coin-tastic Coin Bubble, and a Shield that turns you into a unstoppable smash-everything force of destruction. Drive for miles and miles in a detailed procedural world that never plays the same way twice. Unlock new cars and characters, upgrade cars, and improve your game with performance-boosting powerups and gadgets. Detailed off-road powersliding physics with fully modeled, animated suspensions. From monster trucks to sports cars, every vehicle feels unique. The game uses real time, dynamic shadows for your car to make you feel like you’re really watching a car traverse the sandy sides of this strange world. The coins can be used to buy new vehicles, buy vehicle and track upgrades such as a speed boost or bubbles of coins worth 25,  buy new characters, and even extra life if you need a second wind before the next checkpoint.

Players are able to purchase gold coins within the app for real-life currency. These can be bought in packages of 2000 coins for $0.99, 5000 for $1.99, 10,000 for $2.99, 25,000 for $4.99, or 100,000 for $9.99. Coins can additionally be obtained by logging in via Google+, Facebook, or Twitter, players will receive 100 coins for connecting to each of these social media outlets.Furthermore, it is possible to watch video advertisements in exchange for ‘Free coins!’. These ads are full-screen and must be manually closed, and include advertisements for gaming apps such as ‘Cooking Fever’. One of the icons on the main menu also contains a link to other advertised apps, clicking on the small icon brings up a static pop-up, which players can click on to be taken to the app store in order to download the app (e.g. Shine Runner Free, by the same developers). None of the advertised apps appear to contain inappropriate content. Within the ‘Career’ menu, players are able to view their Stats (including things such as longest distance travelled, average coins collected per game, total time played, etc), Achievements (e.g. ‘Discover the swap area’, ‘Discover the Snowy Mountain area’, etc), as well as a Leaderboard (players are able to share their high scores, and view the high scores of other people in their Google+ circle). As players progress through the game, they are able to race through different scenic routes and new paths. Each path is more challenging, with sharper turns and additional obstacles that can delay/stop players while they are driving. Power-ups and upgrades to vehicles and characters additionally assist players in meeting the new challenges of more difficult courses.  

These unlockables once they’re obtained transform Beach Buggy Blitz from a tedious chore into a genuinely fun experience. Similar to Jetpack Joyride, certain unlockables will help you earn coins faster, so you can unlock more stuff. Once you find what these options are, you’ll gather coins much faster than before. If this process still strains your patience, you can purchase in-game coins, but it’s not a necessity.Beach Buggy Blitz is one of the best infinite run-style games on Android. While it lacks some of the polish of titles like Temple Run and Jetpack Joyride, it still hangs on with its wonderful gameplay. Those who get bored easily may need to overcome a slow start, but those who get enough coins to start unlocking items will be able to feel the real joy from the game.
